Competency-based education: Basics for health professional educators

This workshop is a ‘starting off point’ for health professions’ educators wanting to build their foundational knowledge and skills about competency based education (CBE). This workshop will be of interest to a diverse multi-professional group, including clinicians, clinician-teachers/educators, and administrators across the health professions.

PRE-WORK
There will be one article and one video to read & watch before you attend the workshop to enhance your readiness.

1) Hodges BD. A tea-steeping or i-Doc model for medical education?. Academic Medicine. 2010 Sep 1;85(9):S34-44. (Farah will send the article to those registered for the workshop)

2) Video on CBD or assessment (Farah will send the link to those registered for the workshop).

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize and define the language of CBE
  2. Describe the CBE learning, teaching and assessment paradigm
  3. Compare and contrast CBE learning, teaching and assessment approaches with traditional health professions’ education
  4. Analyze cases of CBE implementation in the health professions
